TREATMENT OPTIONS
Although there is no cure for migraine, with appropriate treatment the majority of patients see significant improvement in their symptoms.
Healthy living and routine are key:
• Eating breakfast
• Having regular meals
• Keeping well hydrated
• Getting adequate sleep
Medication is also useful, but often can only be prescribed by a doctor or headache specialist. Paradoxically too many painkillers can make headache worse.
Migraine preventative medication
• Oral preventatives
• Botulinum toxin
• Anti-calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) monoclonal antibodies
Painkillers
• Paracetamol (Acetaminophen)
• Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. Ibuprofen)
• Triptans (e.g. Sumatriptan)
• Opioids (e.g. Codeine)
Hormonal manipulation (in women with menstrual migraine)
• Oestrogen replacement prior to menstruation
• Switching to the oral minipill
• Hormonal intrauterine devices
Other recognized treatment options include:
Neurostimulation
• Supraorbital nerve stimulator
• External vagal nerve stimulator
• Transcranial magnets
Alternative treatments
• Acupuncture
• Mindfulness / cognitive behavioural therapy
